Core Functionality: Font Detection and Display
Wordmark's core functionality depends on accessing and displaying the fonts installed on your device. This section explains how we access your fonts, process this information, and what data we collect in the process.
Font Detection Methods
Wordmark uses three different methods to detect and access the fonts installed on your system, depending on your browser and preferences:
- Local Font Access API: Modern browsers like Chrome and Edge support a direct API that allows websites to request access to your installed fonts. This method requires your explicit permission through a browser prompt before any font information can be accessed.
- Google Chrome Extension: Our Chrome extension provides font access capabilities for users on Chrome browsers where the Local Font Access API may not be available or preferred.
- Microsoft Edge Add-on: Similar to our Chrome extension, our Edge add-on enables font detection for Microsoft Edge users.
In all cases, Wordmark cannot access your fonts without your explicit permission, either through granting API access or by installing one of our browser extensions.
Local Processing of Font Data
When you grant Wordmark permission to access your fonts, the font information is processed entirely within your browser. This means:
- Font files themselves are never uploaded to our servers (except for fonts you explicitly choose to upload through our subscription features)
- Font rendering and preview generation happens locally on your device
- The actual font data remains on your computer at all times (except for fonts you explicitly choose to upload through our subscription features)
- Only the information you explicitly choose to save (such as tagged fonts or selections) is transmitted to our servers
Font Export and Image Creation
Wordmark offers the ability to create and export images of your text displayed in various fonts. We want to clarify how this process works from a privacy perspective:
- All font preview images are rendered directly in your browser using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
- When you export images (e.g., PNG files) of your text in different fonts, this process is performed entirely on your device using the html2canvas library
- The exported images are generated locally and are not uploaded to our servers
- Any text you enter for font previews remains on your local device and is not transmitted to our servers
This approach ensures that your text data and font renderings remain private to your local device during the export process, maintaining your privacy while still providing full functionality.
Website Interaction & Analytics
Use of Cookies and Local Storage
"Cookies" and "Local Storage" are services provided by your browser for storing information on your computer. Wordmark utilizes these services to provide a better experience for you by remembering your preferences within the site and keeping you logged in (if you have a subscription account).
Use of Google Analytics
Google Analytics is a web analytics service offered by Google that tracks and reports website traffic. Wordmark uses Google Analytics in order to understand its visitors usage patterns and improve the quality of its services. Our implementation of Google Analytics anonymizes the IP address and the data collected from your visit is not associated with your IP address. You can choose to opt-out from Google Analytics with Google's Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.
Use of Hotjar
We use Hotjar to be able to ask questions to our users within our website. Hotjar uses cookies and other technologies to collect data on our users’ behavior and their devices and stores this information in a pseudonymized user profile. Neither Hotjar nor we will ever use this information to identify individual users or to match it with further data on an individual user. For further details, please see Hotjar’s privacy policy. You can opt-out from Hotjar by following this opt-out link.
Subscription Account Features
When you create a subscription account with Wordmark, we collect and store certain personal information and enable specific features. This section explains the data and features related to subscription accounts.
User Account Information
Information We Collect
For subscription account holders, we collect and store the following information:
- Your email address (used as your account identifier)
- Your password (in encrypted form)
- Your name and surname
- Account preferences and settings
- Subscription details (subscription id and subscription renewal date)
- User-generated content (such as font tags, selections, uploaded fonts and storefronts as detailed below)
Payment Information
We use Fastspring (Bright Market, LLC) as our payment processor. When you purchase a subscription:
- Payment details (such as credit card information) are collected and processed directly by Fastspring, not by Wordmark
- We receive limited transaction information from Fastspring, including your name, email, billing address, subscription type, and transaction status
- Fastspring stores your payment information according to its own privacy policy and security standards
- For questions specific to payment data, you may need to contact Fastspring directly
We do not have access to your complete payment details such as full credit card numbers.
Data Usage
The information we collect is used for:
- Account authentication and security
- Providing and improving our subscription services
- Processing payments and managing subscriptions
- Communicating important service information and updates
- Personalizing your experience with our service
We do not sell or rent your personal information to third parties. We only share your data with service providers as necessary to deliver our services (such as Fastspring for payment processing).
Font Count Data
For users with a Pro or Business subscription, we collect and store the total number of fonts detected on your system. This information helps us:
- Ensure our infrastructure can adequately support users with large font collections
- Optimize our services based on typical font library sizes
- Provide appropriate technical support related to font processing performance
This data is stored in association with your account and is treated as personal information subject to the same protections and rights as other account data. We do not share this information with third parties except as required to provide our services.
Uploaded Font Files
When you upload font files through our subscription features:
- We store these files on our secure servers for as long as your subscription is active or until you delete them
- Uploaded fonts are accessible only to your account and those with whom you choose to share specific preview links
- When you delete an uploaded font, we immediately remove it from our systems
- Preview links you create allow others to view and test your uploaded fonts without requiring a Wordmark account
Storage of Font Selections
With a paid subscription account, you have the ability to save a selection of fonts or revisit your previous selection history (A list of fonts is considered as a selection as soon as the filter selected functionality is used). By utilizing this feature, we will collect and store certain information associated with your selections, including font names, visual preferences (e.g. entered text, font size, sort order, letter spacing, line spacing, selected day or night theme and character case) in our database. This information will be linked to your account, and will be used to enable you to save your progress and revisit your previous selections. You have the option to delete this information by logging into your subscription account, and clicking on the relevant feature to delete your selection. It is important to note that once information is deleted, it may not be recoverable. We remind you that by using this feature, you are giving your consent for the collection, use and storage of this information as described in this policy.
Automatic Selection History
For subscribers with active accounts, we automatically save your font selection data whenever you click the "Filter selected fonts" button. This automatic selection history includes:
- Names of the fonts you've selected
- Your visual preference settings at the time of selection
- Date and time of the selection
This data is saved to:
- Allow you to continue working on previous selections at a later time
- Help recover your work in case of browser errors or crashes
- Potentially develop service improvements such as font popularity insights (in aggregate, non-personally identifiable form)
You can access this automatically saved history through the "Selection History" tab in your account. You can delete individual history entries at any time through your account.
Font Tagging and Categorization
Our service provides multiple ways to organize and categorize your fonts. This section explains how we handle data related to font tagging and categorization features.
User-Created Tags
When you create tags for your fonts through our subscription features:
- We store the tag names you create and the list of font names associated with each tag
- This data is linked to your account and is not shared with other users
- Tag data is stored in our database for as long as your account is active or until you delete the tags
- You can edit or delete tags and their associated font lists at any time through your account
While we primarily use tag data to provide you with organizational features, we may also analyze tag data in aggregate, anonymized form to improve our service. This might include understanding common categorization patterns to enhance our Assisted Categorization feature or identifying frequently tagged fonts. This analysis never identifies individual users or their specific tagging preferences.
AI-Assisted Categorization
Our Assisted Categorization feature helps automatically organize your fonts using both our own categorization database and OpenAI's Large Language Model. Here's how it works:
- When you activate Assisted Categorization, we first check our internal database for existing categorizations of your font families
- For fonts not yet in our database, we send only the font family names to OpenAI's API
- The API request contains a standardized prompt asking OpenAI to classify the font name into appropriate typographic categories
- OpenAI's model analyzes the font name and suggests appropriate categories based on naming conventions and typographic knowledge
- We store these suggested categories in our database to improve future categorization
The font names we send to OpenAI contain no personal information, and we do not share any user identifiers or other personal data with OpenAI. All classification is based solely on the font name itself, not on the actual font files or any analysis of how you use these fonts.
Data Storage and OpenAI Policy
The categorization results received from OpenAI are stored in our database to:
- Improve the performance of the categorization service for all users
- Reduce unnecessary AI requests for commonly used fonts
- Enable faster categorization for you and other users in the future
While OpenAI may retain query data according to their own privacy policy, our requests do not contain any information that could identify individual users. For more information about OpenAI's data practices, please refer to OpenAI's Privacy Policy.
You maintain control over AI-suggested categories and can edit, delete, or ignore them. Your use of Assisted Categorization is optional, and you can disable this feature at any time.
Storefronts
Our subscription plans include Storefronts feature that allow you to showcase your fonts to others. Here's how we handle privacy for these features:
Storefront Privacy
- When you create a Storefront, we store the Storefront configuration, including its name, description, and associated font files
- Each Storefront is assigned a unique URL that can be accessed by anyone who has the link
- Visitor interactions with your Storefront (such as viewing fonts or entering custom text) occur directly in their browser
- We do not collect personal information from visitors who access your Storefront links unless they choose to create their own Wordmark account
- Basic analytics data (such as view counts) may be collected and associated with your Storefront to provide you with usage insights
Sharing Control
- You control who can access your uploaded fonts by managing the distribution of your Storefront links
- There is no public directory of Storefronts - access requires the specific URL you choose to share
- You can delete a Storefront at any time, immediately revoking access for all shared links
- When a Storefront is deleted, all associated configuration data is removed from our systems
